The ground has thawed, the days are longer, and your yard is ready to wake up. Here's what to do right now to set yourself up for a stunning summer.
May is the sweet spot for landscaping in Ontario — the frost risk is behind us, the soil is workable, and every hour you put in now pays dividends all summer long.
After a long winter, your grass needs a little TLC before it can truly thrive. Early May is the ideal window to dethatch, overseed thin patches, and apply a slow-release spring fertilizer. Aim to mow once the grass reaches about 3 inches, and never cut more than one-third of the blade at a time — your lawn will thank you.
Leave your mower blade a little higher in May (2.5–3"). Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and crowds out early weeds naturally.
Now is the time to refresh your mulch — a 2–3 inch layer around trees, shrubs, and beds conserves moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds through the hottest months. Pull back any old mulch first and top up rather than pile on.
If you're planting annuals like impatiens, petunias, or marigolds, wait until after the May long weekend to be safe from surprise cold snaps. Perennials and shrubs can go in now.
Winter freeze-thaw cycles are tough on patios, pathways, and retaining walls. Spring is the time to inspect for heaved flagstones, cracked concrete, or mortar that needs repointing. Catching small issues now prevents costly repairs down the road.
Our team is already out in yards across Etobicoke, Toronto, and the GTA this month — mulching, fertilizing, aerating, and planting. Whether you need a one-time spring cleanup or a full-season maintenance plan, we make it easy to hand it off and enjoy your outdoor space without the weekend grind.
